Diving in the Medas Islands: Pedra de Déu
Dive in the northernmost point of the Meda Gran (large), being protected from the south winds.
It is an area full of life and with many different landscapes and itineraries depending on our level. Here we propose a route for divers of “advanced” level, with a maximum depth of 40 meters.
Pedra de Déu diving itinerary
Today it’s time to visit the northern sector of the marine reserve, so after breakfast we went down to leave our diving gear in the vans of the Hotel Les Illes dive Center and we headed to the port of l’Estartit.

On the boat, towards the Meda Gran, Medas Islands
In no more than 10/15 minutes by boat we arrive at the dive site.
Our itinerary will first consist of moving away from the wall of the island to look for some deep canyons full of gorgonians.

Ready to go!!
So, we go down the buoy chain heading north. We pass a pinnacle with beautiful gorgonians.
If we continue down open to our left hand, heading north we find some platforms that go down to more than 40 meters deep.
This area is spectacular with a possible route that visits several deep caves, but this proposal would be a “dive master” level itinerary that we explain in detail in our basic and advanced diving guide in the Medas Islands, coming soon!

Pinnacle full of gorgonians and three-tailed fishes

Gorgonians

Gorgonians with a rainbow wrasse
We find lush gorgonians everywhere on the rock walls of this area, and we see them in very good condition. What beautiful tones, it looks like we are in a colorful forest underwater.

Amazing gorgonians
We will descend to explore the canyons at about -40 meters, although if we stay at the top we will not go below -35 meters.
This area is very interesting to see spiny lobsters, conger eels and maybe lobsters (although we did not see any). We will also find red coral.

Red coral in the hollows and cavities in the rock
After exploring these canyons we will go towards the northern tip of the Meda Gran, where we find its wall again with fantastic gorgonians.
In this area, just below the Pedra de Déu, we see many groupers and camouflaged red scorpion fish!

Grouper

We will gradually climb towards the reef of Pedra de Déu, looking for the tip of the wall of the Meda Gran that we will leave on the right hand side to head south. The rock wall is full of more gorgonians, swallowtail seaperch and breams. Really beautiful!

Two-banded Seabream
We will continue our dive by going around the base of the reef when the time or air consumption indicates it; and now with the wall to our left we will pass again under the Pedra de Déu, approaching its apex.
At this point we will enter a few meters into the blue in search of eagles rays, barracudas, and some other pelagic passing by. From here we take the wall again on our left hand side to return towards the boat.
We go up to approximately 5 meters, where at the reef tip there is an arch, which, crossed by the light, generates beautiful contrasts. It is very nice to stop in this area and take pictures of the landscape.

Here in the arch, we can see some horned blenny and delais’ triplefin posed and they are very nice to be photographed, how cute, how beautiful they are! And the light is perfect to take nice pictures 🙂

From here we continue with the wall on our left, heading southwest towards the boat.
On the way back we see many nudibranchs such as sea cow and flabellina, an exciting world for macro life lovers!

Almost at the end of the dive, before moving away from the wall to go to the boat, we see a very nice moray eel, looking curiously from her hole in the rock, what a beauty!

Moray eel
Very nice diving area, with different landscapes and seabeds. We will see walls covered with gorgonians and lots of life.
The marine reserve of the Medes Islands is a hot spot of biodiversity in the Mediterranean that we must take care of and fight to ensure its conservation.
Other possibilities
Pedra de Déu level “open water” itinerary
Without having to go down more than 20 meters during the itinerary, we can descend by the buoy and go to look for the wall of the Meda gran, heading east.
We will head north (wall on our right hand side) until we reach the rock pinnacle at the tip of the island.
We will turn around and return to the wall and we can ascend up to 5-6 meters to see the arches under the Pedra de Déu. Finally, we will return to the boat heading southwest with the wall on our left hand side until we reach the buoy.
Canyons and deep caves tour

Deep caves

Deep caves
Haremos el inicio similar al recorrido explicado anteriormente “advance”. Una vez entramos en la zona de los cañones bajaremos a explorar sus huecos y fantásticas cuevas, hasta los 45 metros de profundidad.
We will make the beginning similar to the route explained already for level “advance”. Once we enter the area of the canyons we will go down to explore its hollows and fantastic caves, up to 45 meters deep.
